Personal Experience
From Donna Hodgson – Trust Lead for Personal Experiences including Careers, Sports & Creative Arts
At the Shires MAT, we believe every child deserves a rich, inspiring journey through education — one filled not just with academic growth but with unforgettable moments, meaningful opportunities, and personal transformation. That’s why personal experiences and opportunity sit at the very heart of our Trust’s vision.
As a team, we are proud to go beyond the classroom. We know that some of the most powerful learning happens there. Whether it’s performing to a packed theatre during our annual Creative Arts showcase, competing in our many Shires MAT Games, or meeting employers at our Trust Careers events, every student has the chance to take part in opportunities that challenge, inspire and excite them.
What sets us apart? We don’t see these experiences as ‘add-ons’. At the Shires MAT, they are essential, equitable and embedded into the rhythm of school life — driven by passionate staff, tailored to the needs of our communities, and strategically designed to broaden horizons. These experiences aren’t reserved for the few — they’re designed for everyone. Every child, regardless of background or starting point, deserves access to high-quality enrichment that builds confidence, opens doors, and ignites passions. Our cross-Trust collaborations and enrichment calendar mean students benefit from a wider network of talent, resources and ambition.
“I never thought I’d have the chance to perform on a professional stage, but taking part in the Trust Showcase changed how I see myself. Now I’m applying to drama school!”
– Year 11 student, North Bromsgrove High School
“Playing in the Shires MAT Olympics was the highlight of my year. I met new friends from other schools and felt so proud representing mine.”
– Year 8 student, Ridgeway Secondary School
“The Careers Event helped me realise what I want to do after school. I spoke to people who actually work in the job I want – it made my goals feel real. – Year 10 student, Studley High School
Our collaborative approach across the Trust allows us to deliver a unique and varied personal experiences offer. From STEM and enterprise challenges to music showcases, creative writing retreats, leadership academies and outdoor residentials, we are intentional about creating experiences that develop the whole child. Personal experiences are more than just memories — they build confidence, fuel aspiration, and shape identity. They teach resilience, teamwork, creativity, and curiosity — the very skills our young people need to thrive in life beyond school.
Here at the Shires MAT, we’re not just preparing students for exams. We’re preparing them for life — and we are proud to do it with heart, purpose and a commitment to excellence in everything we offer, helping students to understand who they are and who they want to become.
